The Difference of SEO and SEM.
The difference Between SEO And SEM
Well, many people do wonder - especially the beginners (or newbies) and would be bloggers - as to what's the striking comparison, differences and/or even the magic of these two key industry terms/jargon i.e. SEO and SEM.

NB: Disclosure"this post contains affiliate materials, contents, banners and/or links; and if you click on any of them we will earn commissions from your actions/activities. But note that revenue earning is not the main aim of this post in any way whatsoever. Opinions expressed here are our own and DOES NOT imply or represent those of any third-party and their associates in this website".

Now - What is the distinction between the two, and what do they stand for, by the way?!

That's the main question anyway.

But, I would say, there are lots and lots of mind-boggling questions about the two words - mostly confusing - for the new entrants into the blogging field and business.

So, today let's look at the importance and comparisons of the above two major words;

a)    To help you know what each of them mean and
b)    What you will learn new in your information quest and/or blogging journey.

Differences of SEO and SEM.

First, before I explain them to you, for you to know what exactly each term does in terms of content development, strategies and blog ranking, let me differentiate them up, for you to know what they stand for in-terms of their differences.

And I will start with SEO.

1. What is this term SEO?

Meaning of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).
What it SEO means.
I here you ask, "What is this term SEO?" If you encounter this word for the first time then don't worry. The term "SEO" is an acronym, simply meaning "Search Engine Optimization".

For those of you who are in SEO industry - as maybe an expert or industry player in your own rights - then definitely, I know, it’s a familiar term to you. The post will jog your mind a little bit about this topic.

Was it a new word to you?

Well, if the answer is - yes, then that's the meaning.

a). What SEO does.

It involves, in general, all efforts that are put in place by whoever (whether, web administrator/webmaster/writer/blogger etc) is responsible for the visibility and web presence of any website.

In-fact, it's a process that factors in meeting the needs of the users. It intends to satisfy the search intents of the site visitors, by guiding answer feedback from web crawlers to the questions they type into the search engines.

In other words, SEO is the engine oil for any blog's smooth viewer-ship when it comes to content optimization, by boosting its online-presence in the Google SERPs and other search engines like Yahoo!, Bing etc.

Now, let’s define SEM.

2. What SEM means.

What SEM means compared to SEO.

In simple terms SEM stands for "Search Engine Marketing".

They are those significant steps that are taken by any web administrator/webmaster, to ensure that a content/information/the site itself etc, appears or are view-able on the internet.

That is what matters a lot with SEM - i.e. the site's marketability, searchability and spreading of its content in different ways.

In terms of relevance and great content, through:
  • Content marketing Ads.
  • Website's health (site performance and management through PPC i.e. pay-per-clicks etc).
  • Paid advertising campaigns.

SEM is the technique that is used to spread the word about presence or availability of a blog/website and its content i.e. marketing of a site via paid advertising etc.

Importance of both SEO and SEM.

What Organic and Paid Traffic Means.
Organic v. Paid Traffic.

SEO helps a website to rank well in organic search engines in terms of strategic keyword placement, link building, alt tags and image optimization etc, to boost a sites position in the search engine rankings brought by organic traffic i.e. traffic received from the search engines.

Its main aim and the ultimate importance are to propel a blog post/website to achieve its goal of making its way onto any of the SERPs top 10 slots.

While SEM on the other hand involves utilizing the paid Ad tools like Google AdWords, Bing Ad among others to ensure web visibility.

So, it is all about marketing your site and/or its contents by placing clickable Ads - using targeted and relevant keywords that tell a story about what you offer or value you provide for your site audience.

It uses different Ad campaign platforms that can easily be accessed and navigable, to draw attention of site visitors to click on those Ad links.

That way it generates more clicks from leads and in-turn leads into sales.

In other words it involves all efforts and traffic boost from marketing, advertising and paid activities of a blog or website.

Bottom-line: SEO boosts the site's organic search ranking in terms of its optimization strategies, while SEM involves lifting the site's prominence/presence through paid Ad marketing campaigns via Ad platforms e.g. Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Ads, Bing Ads etc. SEM is the entire site's sales funnel.

But in general they both (SEO and SEM) uplift a site's online visibility. There is no single one among the two words that is superior to the other. Because without the support of one to the other, then it means there is no SEO in a whole package of content development, marketing and site presence.

Significance of SEO and SEM on On-page and Off-page Optimization.

When we mention any of the above two terms in blogging, the bottom-line will always revolve around keyword search volumes and web traffic generation, based on the targeted keywords or key phrases.

The keywords/related phrases can never be of any importance, unless there are both On-page and Off-page optimization.

And for your ranking to be successful, there must be some areas that your blog content has to fulfill to realize more traffic, where you have to factor in both terms i.e. SEO/SEM.

SEO covers many areas, including the following;
  1. Blog post/page title.
  2. Header tags (H1-H6).
  3. Meta tags.
  4. Meta descriptions.
  5. Alt tags etc.

When I talk about all the above lists, then what I mean in general is SEO in a SEM context.

When it comes to off-page optimization, both are important; whereas SEO helps in link building to boost the sites authority in terms of link quality, trust and relevance.

SEM on the other hand gives your website it's marketing health green-light where SEO being part and parcel of the whole process, it lays better ground for SEM in offline link profile building.

Conclusion.

Basically the two words are used interchangeably, but SEO is majorly incorporated into SEM. It’s part of the whole SEM marketing structure.

  1. Hello Admin
SEO boosts the site's organic seek rating in phrases of its optimization strategies, at the same time as SEM entails lifting the site's prominence/presence via paid Ad advertising campaigns via Ad platforms e.G. Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Ads, Bing Ads and so on. SEM is the complete website's income funnel.
