How to Choose a Profitable Micro-Niche for Affiliate Marketing.

Choose a Micro-niche for Affiliate Marketing.

Choosing your micro-niche
the easy way.

Choosing the best and profitable micro-niche for your affiliate marketing sometimes would be a challenge, but again that depends on the availability of the kind of affiliate network/program and the types of products or services range it offers for affiliates to market. That applies to the specific niche that you are in too. But also when you eventually narrow down further into picking the subsequent micro-niche that you are planning to venture into (while niching down as your main drive) it can sometimes be an uphill task - especially if you don't do your research first properly to identify the most potentially marketable micro-niche. Although I would say that the most sincere advice ever - when you are starting up - is that; you should always venture into a business that you have an idea, experience and/or most importantly the one that you are passionate about. Though that's not always the case or a business-success detemining factor, but its a very important part of the whole niche/micro-niche selection process that you should atleast consider critically.

Well, I know it might be a bit confusing but at the same time its the reality that most people find hard to accept. This is ofcourse a common challenge for most young businessess or the startup-entrepreneurs out there; because according to Small Business Association - "only about half of small businesses survive passed the five-year mark, ranging from 45.4% to 50% depending on the year the business was started". In other words it means that at least half or slightly more startups/businesses fail or close down shop within their first 5 years of operations.

So based on those findings alone, you need to understand what you are doing or plan to do even if you don't have previous experience on it, its that plain simple and straight forward. It is so because having some idea of whatever business it is that you want to do is of great advantage for the success of your new business or online venture; the assumption for that is that you at least know/knowledgeable of how to run whatever business you start - at least. So I hope you get my point right and clearly, are you?

Now, that aside. let's get straight to it, and here are the 4 steps guide that you should always at least stick to in your micro-niche selection process.

Step #1: Choose a Niche that you are Knowledgeable About.

Remember that even though you should be going for some of the most marketable and profitable niches for you to make money in business - which I know almost all of us (content/affiliate marketers, bloggers etc) rush to do at some point without proper research, although I know that making money is your main goal here and that's the essence of doing business in the first place - i.e to make profit. But always go with what you already know and have some idea how it works, because to be honest with ourselves i.e me, you and others know that selling/promoting products or services that we have some idea about - I know you know - is of great advantage for your business. But not only that, it can also make you feel and speak with confidence, authority and credit about whatever it is that you are doing. Not just to seek ways to make quick money without regard to the buyer and at the expense of your own customers' satisfaction.

So do choose what you at least already know, and that applies to all types of businesses including affiliate marketing. And when it comes to selecting a niche for affiliate marketing I would say that some of the most profitable niches/micro-niches that you need to target are those that seeks to solve, address or answer your customers' immediate and/or personal needs. For example how to solve the needs of; health, fitness, pets, diet and nutrition, personal finance, investment, wealth creation, money, relationship matters etc.

The above example topics are known to be more trending in search when it comes to questions seeking to solve such personal/private needs. So with that in mind try to niche down towards them and write reviews or blog posts about what can help address their (i.e your website visitors/customers') personal needs more, as opposed to those niche articles which only seeks to satisfy their wants. Since wants are second, third or even fourth in most people's lives or list of priorities. NB: I am not saying that wants are bad, but they are not always first priority in what most people plan to satisfy in their lives first, but the time for wants will also come.

Example 1:
Am basing my reasoning to the following example, which according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, it tells us that human beings (people) will always first seek to solve and/or satisfy their basic-need-problems first before any other thing else as you can see in the image below.

This is the Maslow's hierarchy of basic needs.
Source; Courtesy.

As you can see in the image above, the basic needs are the physiological needs which no person can live without.

So based on that, I know you understand that its common knowledge and a norm that someone won't strive to buy luxurious items/things like a TV set, car, go for expensive holiday, buy expensive furniture etc; unless you FIRST satisfy you/your family's immediate and paramount personal basic needs like food, shelter, air that you breath, health etc before anything else.

After that first step the next thing you will have to do is to focus on or look at that specific niche's competition level.

Bottom line: Select the niche that you are knowledgeable about from among the above mentioned topics that you know can address personal needs first.

Step #2: Identify and Gauge its Competition Level.

We have mentioned passion above as one among the determining factors when it comes to the process of selecting your choice micro-niche for affiliate marketing. But first things first, and that is to do niche research; reason for doing that is because you need to gauge your selected niche's favourable competitive levels, since you also don't want to venture into a more competitive micro-niche market that will only prove to be a daunting task in terms of your product testing, promotion strategies and affiliate marketing efforts.

With that in mind now what you have to do is to pick a number of areas that you feel you are able to blog passionately about and comfortably make some money (revenue returns), since it will be a topic that is already being sought after by most web-users seeking help/answers to their problems from those topics and also to help your blog rank on the first page of the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages), which should not be hard for you too.

Example 2:
So again you can choose on German shepherd dog as a topic to blog on, as you narrow down even more.

German shepherd dog breed as a niche.

Now, lets say that you have a professional traning or background as a veterinary doctor, and you also love German shepherd puppies as pets alot; so what you can do is try to blog about pets as a niche, although to rank on pets would be a tough task, because its more a general topic which means many people blog about it, so the competition must be very high and it's kind of not targeted. What you can do is to decide now if you want to branch further to provide veterinary information or advice your target group/niche specifically just about anything you know about puppies for instance. Like you can again split the topic pets further and then now blog about German shepherd puppies' health and/or how to breed German shepherd puppies for sale/business, based on your vet experience or love of puppies as pets.

German shepherds breed niche.
Two German shepherd
puppies playing.

You see its now a two-in-one approach in that you have some professional experience as a veterinarian and you also have passion specifically for German shepherd puppies as your favourite pets. So those alone are two micro-niches (German shepherd puppies health) and (German shepherd puppies breed) which you can come up with a blog to advice your readers on the puppies healthcare or a blog specifically how to breed them for sale. But both micro-niches are within a general (pets) niche.

Once you have selected the two, then next you can use a keyword/competition research and analysis tools like the Ubersuggest or SEMrush to gauge the two micro-niches' competition level i.e to identify which one has atleast a reasonable monthly search volume that can make you rank easily (maybe like 3000 searches per month).

Bottom line: Pick at least two micro-niches (e.g German shepherd pets health or German shepherd breeds) then use one of the best keyword research and analysis tools e.g SEMRush, Ubersuggest to analyse, gauge and identify the micro-niche that has low competition but reasonable monthly search volume, and can help your blog rank easily/faster on the SERPs.

Step #3: Narrow down to the Most Profitable Micro Niche.

Now that you have identified your niche - and I have used pets indicated above as an example - which let us assume you picked it up because you feel it is more marketable in the first place as a general niche compared with the rest. But that should be according to what you prefer or have chosen based on your research and analysis to be more productive, marketable, less competitive but most importantly is likely to be highly profitable among the niches that you have analysed. Then you can again even narrow down further to identify a more potentially marketable micro-niche (sub niche) within the same main niche.

So for instance as I said above if you choose to blog about pets, which of course is a bit broad and more general niche, you can even decide now to narrow down more to German shepherd puppies training as a the micro-niche, but remember to always do your thorough research about its monthly search volume level - which should be at least a reasonable number of searches per month, compared to other keyword terms - before you fully pick or venture into it as a business to target your affiliate marketing goals.

Bottom line: Now pick and settle on the most marketable micro-niche (e.g pets health or pets breeds or pet training) that can easily help you push and achieve your affiliate marketing efforts.

Step #4: Choose the Best Affiliate Network/Programme.

This is the final step in your niche and/or micro-niche selection stages, in which you need to be keen on and since you have identified the micro-niche that you want to target, then finding the right affiliate marketing programme will be your next destination and should now be an easy process. Although most affiliate networks or programmes e.g CJ Affiliate by Conversant, Amazon.com, Share-A-sale etc do offer a wide range of products/services for any type of business for you to choose from - you won't find it hard to get the best affiliate product to market. But if we go by our niche and further micro-niche examples above i.e pets as your broader niche and either German shepherd puppies health or  German shepherd puppies breeds as your micro-niche, you will be able to now select your most preferred profitable micro-niche affiliate product/service(s) that are related, relevant and targeted to your customers for your business. So don't be too general in your marketing promotions and operations.

NB: Your selected micro-niche business name can be your keyword, but should not always be the case. The reason for that is that it will always be able to help web visitors to easily identify your business theme and purpose easily.

Bottom line: Use your micro-niche as an affiliate product/services search guide to find profitable affiliate network product promotion offers.

Conclusion.

Niche marketing is a more specific and targeted way of blogging, and therefore if you decide to micro-niche based on your particular main niche topic then finding the best affiliate marketing offers for your niche would be a great advantage for your website/blog, because to rank on the specific micro-niche that you have picked will be atleast to a greater extent easier than the general blogs. So I would say niche down and micro-niche down even further to your preferred topic.

  1. Affiliate marketing seems profitable for businesses, but requires a lot of effort and time. I myself am using affiliate programs for my business, but also back it up with sms marketing, by sending promotional messages to customers to encourage them in buying our products. For this, I’ve hired a messaging service that has given me the option to send sms to slack as well.

I do agree with you 100%, affiliate marketing requires dedication in whatever it is that you are doing in order to increase sales prospects and in turn revenue. But most importantly it requires patience and strategy to achieve its goal. SMS strategy is one of them, and I am glad that its working out for you. Keep it up.
